How to clean a mattress with baking soda and vinegar
A mattress that smells stale or has light stains does not need an expensive product. Here is the baking soda and vinegar method and, above all, how to dry it.

A mattress collects sweat, dust and moisture, and one day it starts to smell stale or a stain shows up. You can clean it well without an expensive product and without soaking it. The secret is not the foam: it is baking soda given time, and drying.
What you will need
- Baking soda (about 1 cup for a double or queen mattress)
- A vacuum with an upholstery attachment
- White vinegar and water, half and half, in a spray bottle
- Clean, dry cloths
- A fan, if you have one
Step by step
- Strip the bed and wash the bedding at the temperature the label allows.
- Vacuum the whole mattress slowly, including the sides and seams.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the whole surface. A sieve makes it more even.
- Let it sit for 2 to 8 hours. The longer it sits, the more odor it absorbs.
- Vacuum againslowly, until all the powder is gone.
- Flip the mattressif the model allows it, and repeat on the other side.
For light stains
First test the vinegar and water mix in a hidden corner. Then spray a light mist only on the stain, wait a few minutes and press with a dry cloth, without rubbing. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes the liquid deeper. Repeat if needed, always with very little liquid.
Safety: never mix vinegar with bleach. On a foam mattress, use even less liquid, because foam takes a long time to dry. Check the manufacturer's label before using any product.
How to dry it right
This is the step that decides whether the mattress ends up clean or moldy. Keep the room well ventilated with windows open, and point a fan at the mattress. If there is sun, a few hours in the sun helps, as long as the manufacturer allows it. Put the sheets back only when everything is completely dry. The vinegar smell fades as it dries.
When it does not help
- Widespread mold or a damp smell that will not go away: the mattress may not be recoverable. See our mold guide.
- Old urine stains: the result is often partial. You may need a product made for that or a cleaning service.
- A very old mattress: if it sags, smells strongly or is uncomfortable, replacing it may be the best option.
A simple routine
Vacuum the mattress and repeat the baking soda every few months, flip it when the model allows, change the bedding every week and use a washable protector. That cuts the need for heavy cleaning a lot.
Frequently asked questions
Does baking soda kill dust mites in a mattress?
I could not find a basis to say that. Baking soda helps absorb odors, but it is not a dust mite treatment. For allergies, the more reliable path is washing bedding in hot water, using covers and talking to a doctor.
Can I use vinegar on the whole mattress?
No. Use it only on stains, diluted, in light mists. Soaking the mattress traps moisture and can cause mold.
How long should the baking soda sit?
From 2 to 8 hours, or all day if you can. The longer it sits, the more odor it absorbs.
How do I know the mattress is dry?
It should feel cool and dry to the touch in every layer, with no damp smell. If you are unsure, wait one more day with airflow.
